How Tennis Scoring Works

Points in a Game

0 (Love) 15 30 40 Game

If both players reach 40, it's called Deuce. From deuce, a player must win two consecutive points: first to get Advantage (Ad-In if the server, Ad-Out if the returner), then the game.

Games in a Set

  • First player to win 6 games wins the set (must lead by 2)
  • At 6-6, a tiebreak is played

Tiebreak Rules

  • First to 7 points, must win by 2
  • Players alternate serves every 2 points (first server serves 1 point only)
  • Players switch ends every 6 points

BNP Paribas Open Format

  • Both men and women play best of 3 sets
  • Masters 1000 event (one of the biggest outside Grand Slams)
  • Final set uses a regular tiebreak at 6-6
